Having It Your Way:
Understanding State Individual Budgeting Strategies

In response to the growing demand for self-directed services, state developmental disabilities agencies have begun to use individual budgets as a cornerstone of their efforts to help persons with disabilities to gain control over their lives. While interest in this subject is strong, until now very little comparative, cross-jurisdictional information has been available regarding the individual budgeting methods used by the states.

To address this information gap, NASDDDS is pleased to announce the availability of the latest publication in its "Special Studies Initiative" series. Entitled Having It Your Way: Understanding State Individual Budgeting Strategies, this report summarizes the findings and conclusions of an 18-month study of individualized funding methodologies currently being employed by state developmental disabilities service systems.

This timely, groundbreaking analysis summarizes the findings of nationwide survey conducted by NASDDDS in mid-2002. It also contains an in-depth analysis and comparison of individual budgeting practices in nine, selected states.
