Sustainability -- meeting present needs without compromising the ability to meet future needs -- is a critical factor for state leaders as they navigate the combined challenges of dwindling resources and a growing demand for services.
Building sustainable service systems for individuals with developmental disabilities requires rethinking the role that services play in people's lives and reframing our relationships with individuals, their families, and communities.
A sustainable comprehensive system of supports must be built on key principles:
1) Services must lead to personal empowerment, increased self-reliance, and strengthened support networks.
2) Planning for the future with individuals and their families must begin early in life.
3) Being person-centered will strengthen natural support networks and enable people to live the life they choose.
