Main Purpose Of Job
The State Autism Coordinator leads and coordinates the identification and evaluation of existing services for people with autism and their families throughout the State of Maryland, and in consultation with the Advisory Stakeholder Group on Autism–Related Needs, develops a strategic plan to address the needs of this community.

POSITION DUTIES
In consultation with the Advisory Stakeholder Group on Autism-Related Need: identifies and evaluates existing public, private and nonprofit services for people with autism and their families and caregivers.
Direct and provide ongoing support to the Advisory Stakeholder Group on Autism-related needs.

Develop a strategic plan for addressing autism-related needs in the State, including, at a minimum, needs in the areas of employment, housing, health care training for first responders and criminal justice professionals, and identification and intervention.

Develop performance measures for the strategic plan for ensure improved outcomes for people with autism, and increased support and services for their families and caregivers.

Monitor and evaluate the implementation of the strategic plan, including the success of the State in meeting national benchmarks.

Develop and promote public education and awareness of autism issues and concerns.

Appear before State, federal and local officials to advise and discuss the needs and concerns for Marylanders with autism and their care providers.

Act as State autism representative before advocacy organizations and other government and non-government partners.

Lead research on autism policy issues and ensures all legislation, regulations and other developments on autism issues are monitored and tracked.

Ensure autism affairs/issues and advocacy groups efforts are coordination and integrated through cross-functional collaboration across the State of Maryland.

Prepare and submit an annual report to the Governor and the General Assembly, and other pertinent reports, briefings, white papers and recommendations as needed to leadership, stakeholders, and others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Six years of administrative staff or professional work.

Notes:

  1. Candidates may substitute 30 college credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.
  2. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and two years of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.
  3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.
  4. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Previous experience chairing committees on Autism related needs;
Previous experience in strategic planning;
Experience managing grants;
Experience preparing reports and statistical data;
and personal or lived experience with autism.
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent from an accredited college or university within Health, Human Services, Disability Studies, or a related field.
