Guidance on Inappropriate Use of Antipsychotics: Older Adults and People with Intellectual and Devel

SAMHSA (2019)

This guidance reflects the Behavioral manifestations of conditions such as dementia and IDD which are common, and at times escalating to the point of agitation and aggression that can be dangerous for both the person as well as caregivers. It describes that although approaches to care aimed at behavioral modification should be first-line for challenging behaviors, older adults and people with disabilities are often prescribed sedating medications such as antipsychotics as a way to manage disruptive behavior.
