Tennessee Holds Leadership Academy for Excellence in Disability Services


Tennessee (TN) Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities holds first Leadership Academy for Excellence in Disability Services graduated from this new and innovative program. The Academy was created by the Council on Developmental Disabilities in partnership with the TN Department of Human Resources (who also organized and conducted the Academy). The curriculum and leadership competencies were developed by leadership from all participating agencies (the Council, Dept. of Human Resources, Bureau of TennCare, Dept. of Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities, Dept. of Education, Dept. of Health, Department of Human Services & Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Department of Veterans Services, and the Commission on Aging & Disability).

This Leadership Academy aimed to:

  1. Embed key values like self-determination, a lifespan perspective, the importance of home- and community-based supports, community integration and person-centered practices across the disability service system
  2. Create a shared set of values and goals for State agencies that directly impact the lives of people with disabilities in TN
  3. Create an aligned customer-focused approach for agencies serving Tennesseans with disabilities
  4. Develop a pool of leaders who are mentored, trained and prepared to move into future leadership positions within the Tennessee disability service system
